It’s also helpful to know that Paul was warning about “works of the law“ salvation, not the necessity of obeying Christ, which he made sure he did. See:
(video) David Pawson on PAUL and JAMES: Paul was defending Gentiles from JEWISH *works-of-the-law* LEGALISM; James was defending Jews from Gentile LICENSE TO SIN. • When Paul says ‘WORKS’ he means *works of the law,* but James means *actions*. • “Faith without actions cannot save you.” • FAITH + ACTIONS = SAVING FAITH!
Paul also said: “work out your own salvation through fear and trembling,” which he then did, running his race to win, being able to say: “Herein I also practice *always* having a conscience void of offense toward God and men” (Acts 24:16).

The eternal security teachers use the term WORKS SALVATION for the no-eternal security position. They teach one is either believing in once saved always saved OR in a works salvation to smear and discredit their opposition. http://www.evangelicaloutreach.org/wo… Do not be deceived. You must be saved at the point of death to enter God’s kingdom. http://www.eternallifeblog.com/catego…
