The Calvinists (and Catholics) exalt Augustine of Hippo as a great theologian. In fact, John Calvin systemized Augustine’s doctrines and this is, to a large degree, the Calvinism presented today. What a surprise it will be for many to read the following prayer from him, their real founder, to Mary for salvation. Please ponder this prayer and it will become apparent how darkened and deceived Augustine really was. Only God knows how many have been stumbled because of exalting Augustine to an elevated level which he doesn’t deserve. It is impossible for him to be a great theologian as many think of him just in light of this. He was a heretic and nothing better:

Blessed Virgin Mary, who can worthily repay you with praise and thanksgiving for having rescued a fallen world by your generous consent? What songs of praise can our weak human nature offer in your honor, since it was through you that it has found the way to salvation? Accept then such poor thanks as we have to offer, unequal though they be to your merits. Receive our gratitude and obtain by your prayers the pardon of our sins.Take our prayers into the sanctuary of heaven and enable them to bring about our peace with God.

May the sins we penitently bring before Almighty God through you be pardoned. May what we beg with confidence be granted through you. Take our offerings and grant our request; obtain pardon for what we fear, for you are the only hope of sinners. We hope to obtain the forgiveness of our sins through you. Blessed Lady, in you is our hope of reward.

Holy Mary, help the miserable, strengthen the discouraged, comfort the sorrowful, pray for your people, plead for the clergy, intercede for all women consecrated to God. May all who venerate you, feel now your help and protection. Be ready to help us when we pray, and bring back to us the answers to our prayers. Make it your continual care to pray for the People of God, for you were blessed by God and were made worthy to bear the Redeemer of the world, Who lives and reigns forever.

—Saint Augustine (d. 430)

That was found in the Dictionary of Mary (Catholic Book Publishing Co.: New Jersey, 1997, 1985, p. 531.)

True salvation is only found in the Lord Jesus. He is our life (1 John 5:12) and the only way to the Father (John 14:6). Praying to Mary is not going to assist in obtaining forgiveness of sins for us. It is also disobedience in itself to how the Lord taught for us to pray.

To be forgiven of your sins you must repent (turn away from your sins) and place a trusting and submitting faith in the Lord Jesus who shed his blood for your sins. Please read the New Testament for yourself, believe what it says and change accordingly. The Bible Is Final Authority, not John Calvin nor the Pope. Your eternal destiny depends on what you do with the message of the Bible. The Augustine wrongly exalted by Calvinism (and Catholicism) is not the real mother of Jesus shown in the Bible. GOD BLESS YOU.

Calvinists get their doctrine from the Word of God. If Augustine measures up to that Standard in some ways, fine; if he falls before that Standard in others, Calvinists obviously don’t choose Augustine over the Word of God at those places. I’m a Calvinist, but I don’t see infant baptism or the perpetual virginity of Mary in the Bible as Calvin did. Or claimed to, maybe for reasons having to do with the still ongoing war of the Reformation.

      Frederick Santal,
Actually, what Dan Corner says above has great merit.
Corner proves that Augustine believed a serious and totally nonbiblical heresy, a doctrine of demons which alone would have disqualified him from being an overseer.
According to Paul in 1 Timothy and Titus, an elder is disqualified if he is not “apt to teach.” But both Augustine and Calvin were clearly Biblically disqualified for far worse.
This following summary sheds further light on the subject, including how Augustine was absolutely biblically disqualified from even being a going-to-heaven, real Christian. And clearly John Calvin was in the same dire situation. See my Calvin Didn’t Get It posts along with Who-Goes-To-Heaven Scriptures — Narrow is the Way | Who are the Children of God?
      From BibleLife.org…:

Calvin‘s formal education was complete in 1527 when he was eighteen. According to the Catholics, he drifted from his Roman Catholic faith to become a humanist and a reformer. The “sudden conversion” to a spiritual life in 1529 could possibly be interpreted as his becoming saved, but throughout his life he counted on his Roman Catholic infant baptism as the basis of his regeneration.

John Calvin studied the voluminous writings of Saint Augustine, the Roman Catholic Bishop of Hippo (354-430 AD), much more so than those of Martin Luther, his contemporary. Calvin is continually praising Augustine’s work with numerous references and quotations. Augustine was greatly influenced by the Gnostics, an early Christian sect, whose doctrine was heretical. Gnostics believed that mankind was wholly evil, and some sects even renounced marriage and procreation. They also believed in two gods, one evil and one good. Their teachings are believed to have influenced Saint Augustine in the development of his theology of the “total depravity” of mankind and his concept of God. For nine years Saint Augustine adhered to Manichaeism, a Persian dualistic philosophy proclaimed by Mani (216-276? AD) in southern Babylonia (Iraq) that taught a doctrine of “total depravity” and the claim that they were the “elect.” Augustine could not advance in his Manichaeism religion because of his sinful lifestyle. He had a reputation as a “womanizer” and a fornicator.

Augustine then turned to skepticism and was attracted to the philosophy of Neoplatonism. He blended these beliefs with his later Gnostic and Christian teachings. Augustine’s prolific writings were more strongly biased by his previously-obtained theology than on his detailed study of the Christian Scriptures. He used Christian Scripture out of context when words or phrases could be adapted to match his theology. Augustine’s teachings were in turn passed on to John Calvin through his extensive study of Augustine’s writings, the most popular being his book, Confessions. It is very easy to follow the trail of John Calvin’s theology from the pagan religion of Mani in Babylonia to Saint Augustine and into his own writings in France and Geneva that distort the Word of God. Calvin’s false doctrine came directly from Augustine.

You actually sound just like a hyper-Calvinist. If someone doesn’t have perfect doctrine they’re bound for hell. The fact is many Protestants see infant baptism in the Bible, I don’t. That doesn’t mean they believe in baptismal regeneration though. Certainly Calvin didn’t. There are some current scalawags that call themselves Calvinists but are proto (and secret) Romanists. They call themselves ‘Federal Vision’. They believe in baptismal regeneration just as Rome does. You may have come under their influence and are applying it to Calvinists in general. They hate Calvinism as much as you guys do.
And Calvin was not a student of Augustine in the way you guys are presenting it. Calvin was a student of Scripture. To a rather impressive degree. Sola Scriptura. Calvin learned from past Christians, as all Christians do, but all was put before the tribunal of Scripture. That is what the Protestant Reformation was all about. And Calvin was central to it.

    • Jeff Fenske

      Frederick,

Did you even look at these articles cited above to even know where I’m coming from?

…Augustine was absolutely biblically disqualified from even being a going-to-heaven, real Christian. And clearly John Calvin was in the same dire situation. See my Calvin Didn’t Get It posts along with Who-Goes-To-Heaven Scriptures — Narrow is the Way | Who are the Children of God?

Who-Goes-To-Heaven Scriptures… is God’s standard, and the Calvin posts show how he fell far short.

His bad doctrine just Biblically disqualified him from being an elder. That’s what I said, right? Though, following his own bad doctrine probably significantly affected his behavior, which is what disqualified him from heaven according to what the Bible says. He was so reverse-Christian in his behavior that it’s just so obvious. There is no evidence of real repentance, getting right with those he hurt before he died, from anything I’ve heard. And because he considered himself a teacher he got the stricter judgment stated in the Bible.

You say: “Calvin was not a student of Augustine in the way you guys are presenting it.” But you don’t back that up. Here is proof that Calvin was hugely into Augustine: AN INVESTIGATION INTO CALVIN’S USE OF AUGUSTINE http://ajol.info/index.php/actat/article/viewFile/52214/40840

And by the way, I don’t claim to be an expert on John Calvin. Nothing about him has ever interested me, except wondering how he could have led so many astray. I discovered in 1975 how erroneous Calvinism is when I found Hebrews 10:26-39. And that’s just one of many texts that alone refute key components of what he taught. I’m still perplexed why anyone would fall for the TULIP trap.

And I don’t consider Calvin a real Christian, someone whom I could learn anything spiritually worthwhile from. He’s mean and vindictive, the opposite of what Jesus taught we are to be. There is no way he was in Paul’s who-goes-to-heaven list in Galatians 5. He doesn’t demonstrate the fruit of the Spirit.

I do know a John-Calvin scholar who ended up being totally repulsed by this man; though, at first he was a big fan. The truth about Calvin is hidden from even seminary students. My friend and I attended a seminary where Calvin was basically worshiped, but I’m convinced that many would not if the professors were more forthright about who Calvin really was. They hid the truth, but others hid the truth from them too.

The same can be said for Martin Luther and how his evil side is struck from the history books that students read.

I’m into what real Christianity is and how we are to experience that — instead of some abstract formula that is keeping millions of people from knowing Christ and being led by the Spirit of God, Himself.

Calvinist and Lutheran thought is one of the main factors why America is going down today. Most ‘Christians’ are no longer salt and light. And the world knows it. When real Christianity happens, when we are one with each other by being truly in Christ, “then the world will know,” Jesus said.

This is what excites me. Calvinism, almost without exception is a black hole that sucks life out of people. It’s a spiral downward. I want to live in the LIGHT where fruit remains and joy is full.

Calvinism is a dark abyss. I see nothing good that has come out of it. The sooner it’s exposed for what it is the sooner we can get on with real Christianity.

    >And by the way, I don’t claim to be an expert on John Calvin. Nothing about him has ever interested me
Enough said. Into that void has been poured oceans of Romanist and Arminian propaganda. First hand, second hand, third hand, whatever. I don’t need to know about what I hate, I just know I hate it. Great.

    • Jeff Fenske

      Frederick,
I have studied real Christians’ lives, but I have no desire to study John Calvin, because I don’t consider him to have been a real Christian. But I cited proof of my points from those who have studied Calvin.
You have cited nothing to support your claims.

I’m sorry, but the Blessed Mother has been loved , praised & prayed to for a long time. What makes you think that you know better what authentic Christian doctrine is than the Father’s of the Church? My friend, you are truly mistaken. What son doesn’t love to hear praise of his mother? You should pray to God for clarification about this.
