David, I don’t know you relate Romans 7 to what you are saying, so I wasn’t sure how to respond.
Romans 7 refers to life BEFORE the Son. One of my professors at Trinity Evangelical Divinity School, Bruce Ware, taught this in class:
Bruce Ware: Christians are wrongly using Romans 7 to justify defeat in their lives!
Romans 8 is the overcoming chapter, which also has clear warnings about falling away if we don’t walk according to the Spirit.

I would say that God’s grace is always available to help us overcome. We never have to sin:
“No temptation has taken you except what is common to man. God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted above what you are able, but will with the temptation also make the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it.” (1 Cor. 10:13)
But God also gives us free will to willfully sin, going our own way instead — which is why there are dozens of verses encouraging us to overcome, and warning us about what will happen if we do not.
Many truly born-again Christians never get fully clean, and live this way day after day with their consciences condemning them, walking according to the flesh instead of the Holy Spirit.
Also, the Bible teaches that we must do our part as the Holy Spirit enables us:
“Cleanse Ourselves?” — We both cleanse ourselves and Jesus Christ makes us clean. Do your part, without which God will not do His. | We must accept ALL of the Apostle’s Doctrine, not just selected verses. No Apostle ever wrote a verse to anyone. They wrote entire letters.
Pastors should be teaching the people how to overcome, instead of teaching the false doctrine that we don’t have to overcome.
Not even John Calvin, the father of once-saved-always-saved overcame.
