How shall we win the cultural wars if we are unwilling to win the spiritual and intellectual wars? It appears to me far too many believers are standing on the sidelines of life as we watch the continual erosion of Christian values and influence upon our present society. From politics to business to educational values, the laws of morality are being bent and altered beyond what our parents and grandparents could have ever imagined. The media, the arts and entertainment has certainly played a part in what is now acceptable behaviour in public and it has blurred the lines of what is good and what is evil. It has pushed the boundaries to a point of where unhealthy perversions in various forms now appear acceptable and normal behaviours.
There is a stern warning we read in Isaiah 5:20, “Woe unto them that call evil good, and good evil; that put darkness for light, and light for darkness; that put bitter for sweet, and sweet for bitter!”
We as a nation and world are reaping what we have sown. For all such ideas and all beliefs have consequences and we the church can no longer afford look the other way.
When the Apostle Paul came to Athens he was greatly grieved at what he saw around him. We read in Acts 17:16, “Now while Paul waited for them at Athens, his spirit was stirred in him, when he saw the city wholly given to idolatry.” Paul did not just walk away discouraged by these ungodly behaviours and things he saw there, instead he challenged the men of his day. As we read in Acts 17: 22, “Then Paul stood in the midst of Mars’ hill, and said, Ye men of Athens, I perceive that in all things ye are too superstitious. 23 For as I passed by, and beheld your devotions, I found an altar with this inscription, TO THE UNKNOWN GOD. Whom therefore ye ignorantly worship, him declare I unto you.”
Here was the city of Athens so confused they made it a capital offense to preach the truth about Jesus. So Paul in a brilliant move in the Holy Spirit simply used this inscription as text to help him declare that “THE UNKNOWN GOD”, they did not know was in fact the GOD he was representing. I offer you again James 1:22, “But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves.” The Lord Jesus/Yeshua said in John 10:27,” My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me:”

It’s shocking how many supposed mature Christians argue against the call to holiness (as if it were impossible), and they promote the idea that sin is an unfortunate but expected part of our lives. They believe, contrary to Scripture, that the cross paid the penalty of sin but it doesn’t give us power over sin. Simply, they expect to sin and don’t feel concern over their condition or the sinful habits of others.
The truth is that we never have to sin again. If we do, it should be an uncommon, major event that causes us to hit our face in mourning, tears, brokenness and urgent repentance.
