What is church?
Who is it for?
Is it broken?
Can it be better?

“If I only had this as my guide … if all I had was the Bible … and I was to read this book and then start a church, what would it look like? Would it look like the thing that we’ve built here and all refer to as church? Or would it look radically different?”

Trends come and go in our culture and the church seems to follow.

BASIC is a seven-part series of short films that challenges us to reclaim the church as Scripture describes it to be.

This series speaks to those who have questions about the church and to those who may have lost interest in the church.

What is church?
You are church.
I am church.
We are church.

[1-minute video] Francis Chan: “God doesn’t want me to do this by myself. He doesn’t just want me to follow Him on my own. That’s why he created ‘church’ — the church.”

Is church a specific place where individuals gather once a week to sing a few songs and listen to someone talk about God, or does church refer to the people themselves, who share a common mission in the world? Maybe if we start to view church the way God designed it, as a family loving each other and living and sharing all of life together, we might show the world a glimpse of who God is, and we might begin to impact the world as God intended us to do.

[1-minute video] Francis Chan: Communion – to fear, follow, be filled, fellowship, teach, pray, and remember. Together. — “We can fool ourselves: ‘You know what? At least we’re doing something, and something is always better than nothing.’ But I would challenge that…”

“We can fool ourselves:
‘You know what? At least we’re doing something,
and something is always better than nothing.’

But I would challenge that,
because I look in scripture and
there are times when the church was just missing it,

and God says:
‘It would be better to not just do anything than to do that.'”

Why was the first Communion an intimate gathering with Jesus’ twelve disciples, instead of the multitudes following Him? Why did early believers go from home to home for the Lord’s Supper? Because biblical church is about true community; it’s an intimate, full-time commitment with fellow believers to fear, follow, be filled, fellowship, teach, pray, and remember. Together. Because we are church. The seventh and final film in the BASICseries.

[2-minute video] Francis Chan: Important concepts God will teach us when we look up what He subtly tells us

One of the greatest ways to learn from God!

This has also happened to me many times. I’ll just realize I heard (in my mind – not audibly – just a thought that I know I didn’t originate) “Psalm 20,” for example, and I’ll look it up. And sometimes I’ll hear this same chapter later, even many times until I get it.

Francis recorded this almost four years ago, when he was almost certainly still teaching once-saved-always-saved. God was helping Francis be balanced in his understanding, and Francis was listening, and looking up what he subtly heard from God’s still, small voice. And now look at the fruit from Francis hearing and obeying!!!

Let’s all hear and obey. God is trying to balance us, bringing us into truth so we can be ‘ONE’ with each other, abiding in Him. Then the world will know — and we’ll be so happy!!!

are you willing to say “anything” God asks you to?

[EXCELLENT video] Francis Chan & Preston Sprinkle: Erasing Hell — “He gets to define what love is, and not us.” “That means my sin is way worse than I could ever even imagine.” | ~”I think this whole concept of ‘how could God do this’ is woven into the fabric of our culture that says ‘how dare my dad tell me what I can and cannot do!’ We’ve lost the idea of authority, and it’s killing our culture.”

Francis Chan and Preston Sprinkle are coauthors of: Erasing Hell: What God said about eternity, and the things we made up, which I have read, and highly recommend; however, I was disappointed with one of their points. When Jesus mentions the worm that never dies and the fire that is never quenched, I do believe the worms and the fire is real, not figurative, which Mary Katherine Baxter experienced. She explains how the fires and utter darkness are fully compatible in that realm. It’s a place we don’t want to go, period!

I listened to the audio book a few times through. Francis wrote the final draft, but Preston narrates the text, which to me, isn’t ideal, since I’m used to hearing Francis express his own thoughts. But as you can see here, Preston is a great guy too!

There is one thing he says though…. Not wanting to go to hell is actually a good motivation for serving God and living a life in love, in Christ. Jesus, Himself used the threat of hell as a motivational warning. For example, on lusting:

27 “You have heard that it was said to those of old,  ‘You shall not commit adultery.’  28 But I say to you that whoever looks at a woman to lust for her has already committed adultery with her in his heart. 29 If your right eye causes you to sin, pluck it out and cast it from you; for it is more profitable for you that one of your members perish, than for your whole body to be cast into hell. 30 And if your right hand causes you to sin, cut it off and cast it from you; for it is more profitable for you that one of your members perish, than for your whole body to be cast into hell.

Very important topic and discussion!

“He gets to define what love is,
and not us.”

“We question things like ‘does a loving God torture those in hell?’ But I have another question. Does a fair God just forgive you for all the stuff that you did? Does a fair God let you escape hell? Does a fair God have His own Son come down and die for your sake? It’s weird how we’ll question ‘God, how could you punish anyone,’ but we never ask the question, ‘God, how could you forgive anyone?'”

“His thoughts are WAY BEYOND mine.”

“There’s just a sense of arrogance when I tell God ‘look,
this is right or this is wrong….'”

And Francis’ excellent statement @ 52:25 ends with:

“… And then when you disobey God, Himself, there are consequences to that. But the way that we teach love [to children – editor] has been: oh, you never punish; you never discipline; you never say ‘no.’ Just let them act out. It’s like: no, that’s not what God does. That’s not love.

So I think this whole concept of ‘how could God do this,’ it’s woven into the fabric of our culture that says ‘how dare my dad tell me what I can and cannot do.’ And we’ve lost the idea of authority all together, and it’s killing our families; it’s killing our churches; it’s killing our culture.”

– Francis Chan

Preston Sprinkle adds:

“When I think of hell, it’s made me kind of think of the enormity of our sin.
If God is at all just, and He says that the punishment for sin is hell,
that means my sin is way worse than I could ever even imagine.”

Francis Chan re-commits to ‘ONE’ happening: “I gave up on UNITY … but once again, His Word is bothering me. … Our ONENESS is far more than a “nice idea” we should pursue if we can find the time. It was a motivation for the cross.”

From: Francis Chan’s blog francisupdates.tumblr.com…

I gave up on unity.

Over the years, I’ve been convicted by passages that describe the unity Christ wants in His church (John 17, 1 John 4, 1 Corinthians 12, Philippians 2, Acts 2…).  But whenever I’ve made efforts toward bringing believers together, I run into seemingly insurmountable barriers.  I don’t know how to overcome the differences in theology, convictions, and personalities.  So I gave up long ago.

But once again, His Word is bothering me.  This time around, it’s the second half of Ephesians 2 that is convicting me.  I confess, I had never taken a real close look at this passage. Until this recent study, I hadn’t noticed the deep connection between the cross and unity.  Our oneness is far more than a “nice idea” we should pursue if we can find the time.  It was a motivation for the cross.

14 For he himself is our peace, who has made us both one and has broken down in his flesh the dividing wall of hostility 15 by abolishing the law of commandments expressed in ordinances, that he might create in himself one new man in place of the two, so making peace, 16 and might reconcile us both to God in one body through the cross, thereby killing the hostility. 17 And he came and preached peace to you who were far off and peace to those who were near. 18 For through him we both have access in one Spirit to the Father. 19 So then you are no longer strangers and aliens, but you are fellow citizens with the saints and members of the household of God, 20 built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Christ Jesus himself being the cornerstone, 21 in whom the whole structure, being joined together, grows into a holy temple in the Lord. 22 In him you also are being built together into a dwelling place for God by the Spirit.

I don’t know how this will play out in my life this time.  I don’t have a brilliant master plan to unite His children.  I just figured I would start by getting you to stare at His Word again, and by praying that His Spirit would bring unity to His church.  I certainly don’t have the answer, but I care again and more than I ever have.  Our Father wants His children tightly connected, and our Savior died to make it possible.  Shouldn’t we be working and praying harder about this?

Q&A: Francis Chan on Rob Bell and Hell

Why ‘Erasing Hell’ was his most difficult book, how ‘Love Wins’ prompted repentance, and whether ‘Believe in Jesus or you’ll go to hell’ is good news.

Interview by Mark Galli

Erasing Hell: What God Said About Eternity, and the Things We’ve Made Up
by Francis Chan and Preston Sprinkle
David C. Cook, July 2010
192 pp., $14.99

Few books have generated as much theological conversation as Rob Bell’s Love Wins—and fewer still have sparked several response books within months of their appearance. Francis Chan, whose books Crazy Love and Forgotten God are still on bestseller lists, is a somewhat surprising addition to the pack with Erasing Hell. (Chan’s coauthor, Preston Sprinkle, is associate professor of biblical studies at Chan’s Eternity Bible College.) Christianity Today senior managing editor Mark Galli is the author of another of the response books, God Wins, and interviewed Chan last week.

In several places in your book, it’s clear that you are conflicted about even addressing this topic.

It’s weird. I’ve never felt a need to really respond to someone else’s writing. And yet reading Love Wins set a lot of things spinning in my mind. Some of it was concern, but some was doubt: Am I sure of what I believe? Let me go back and study. Several times in the middle of the night I couldn’t even sleep. I really believe the Lord wanted me to do this, but there is a wrestling on that point because I thought, “Gosh, that’s just not me. That’s not what I’m comfortable with. I really don’t think I’ll enjoy this at all. I’m not looking forward to all the backlash and everything else.”

The other side was that I was really hoping to discover some things I hadn’t discovered before—or maybe this was an opportunity to soften my stance on hell. I was hoping to find that in Scripture. And so when I didn’t it find it, it made me even more sick to my stomach.

[…]

When you say that your study caused you to realize that you had some sins to repent of, what type of things are you talking about?

As I reread the Gospel passages, Jesus’ words are much harsher than I remember. There’s a tone in some of the things that he said that are really difficult to stomach, and he says things in a way that I would not have.

Because we in America read certain passages over and over to the neglect of others, we start to believe that Jesus had a friendly tone all the time. And that there isn’t any wrath or anger or judgment. When you read it all like you are reading it for the first time, you walk away going, “Wow, he was pretty hardcore.”

Here’s what I had to repent of: I had felt the need to soften a lot of Jesus’ statements, because in my arrogance I think, “Okay Jesus, I’m not going to say that like that. Trust me, people will like you more and be more willing to accept you if I say it like this.” Obviously I’ve never said that to God. But that’s the attitude I’ve taken, and it made me sick. Who in the heck do I think I am? To think that I can make God more palatable or attractive if I try and change the tone in which he says some things. I know people say, “Well it’s just cultural this or that.” That’s garbage. People back then had a much deeper reverence for God than we do. Especially the religious community. Yet it’s to those people whom he speaks so harshly.

What in the world would he say to us today? I don’t think it’d be a softer message. I had to come before God and say, “Lord I feel sick.” And I confessed to Mark [Beuving, who edited the book] and Preston [Sprinkle, the coauthor] as we were working on the book, “I confess to you guys, I confess to the church, I know I have backed away from certain things because of my arrogance. I thought I could attract more people to Jesus by hiding certain things about him.” I had to confess my arrogance.

[…]

What do you think is the biggest misunderstanding contemporary Christians have about hell?

…the main thing is that we have tried to block [hell] out of our minds. Yet because it’s written about so often in Scripture, I think God does want it on the forefront.

[…]

I thought one of Rob Bell’s compelling statements was that sometimes we make the gospel sound like “Believe in Jesus or you’ll go to hell.” Which turns the gospel not into good news but into a threat. Have you thought about how we can talk about this reality without making it sound like a threat or spiritual extortion?

Well, that’s difficult. Because don’t you kind of get that when you read the Scriptures? That’s a struggle I have. When I read the Scriptures, it sure seems threatening. “Don’t fear man who can just kill your body. Fear God who can destroy your body and soul in hell.”

I see God in his love warning me of hell because he wants me to embrace him so badly. And I don’t see that as a bad thing. It’s like warning my kids about not being careful in crossing the street: “Do you understand what will happen?”

When Jesus left He told His disciples that the Spirit would come-then the Spirit came! Where is that power in today’s church? No wonder no one is attracted to the Church. So how do we tap into this power? First we have to realize that the Spirit is not this that we can control. Rather, it is a wave that we get to jump on and ride-we’re not splashing, trying to create the wave-all we can do is ride it and have a blast! Like in the book of Acts-they didn’t create that movement of God, no, they rode it! So let’s stop quenching the Spirit in our churches and in our lives.

The first words of Jesus’ ministry were “Follow Me.” He did not promise health, wealth, comfort, or safety. But He did ask that we give up everything for His sake. We often think of Jesus as a teacher and a sacrificial lamb, yet forget that He is also the judge who will come back to judge mankind. Like the disciples, we follow Him to learn of the Kingdom of Heaven, but also because He holds the keys to eternal life.

I added the word alleged, because Osama almost certainly died almost 10 years ago. Type in “Osama” into my search engine at ToBeFree if you’re interested as to how sure it’s been that we’ve been told the truth about this supposedly wonderful event.

And did you know that Osama bin Laden wasn’t even wanted by the FBI for 9/11, because there wasn’t enough evidence?

Osama even said he did not do it.

The only video in which he said he did was certainly not him saying it, but an Osama with a wider nose, wider face….

There are so many lies and deceptions today, but even if Osama did have something to do with 9/11, and that the planes really did take down the towers (which they could not have — which I prove at ToBeFree), and that 9/11 was not really an inside job blamed on Osama to justify the subsequent wars and police state mandates, and that Osama really was just now killed, not a look-a-like, and then the body was dumped into the ocean because of Islamic law, which is not really Islamic law or tradition — then what should the real Christian response be?

[The place of FREEDOM — where we will be SAFE and find REST] Francis Chan on loving God with ALL of our HEART: “In Moses’ time, the HEART was understood to be the seat of a person’s emotions, the very center of his being, the place where decisions are made.”

FRANCIS CHAN from his book “Crazy Love,”
emphasis mostly mine

The Engrossed

Jesus didn’t pull the greatest command out of nowhere. He hearkened all the way back to the days of Moses, when God says to His people,

Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God, the LORD is one. Love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength. These commandments that I give you today are to be on your hearts, Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. Tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads. Write them on the door-frames of your houses and on your gates.

—Deuteronomy 6:4–9

In Moses’ time, the heart was understood to be the seat of a person’s emotions, the very center of his being, the place where decisions are made. The soul was considered the basis for a person’s traits and qualities, or his personality. Strength refers to physical, mental, and spiritual strength.

So within this command to love God with “all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength,” every fiber of humanity is addressed. Our goal as people who follow Christ should be no less than becoming people who are madly in love with God.

A person who is obsessed with God is
characterized by committed,
settled, passionate love for God,
above and before every other thing
and every other being.

Haven’t we all prayed the following prayer? Lord, we pray for safety as we travel. We ask that no one gets hurt on this trip. Please keep everyone safe until we return, and bring us back safely. In Jesus’ name we pray, amen. The exact wording may vary a bit, but that is the standard prayer we recite before leaving on mission trips, retreats, vacations, and business trips.

We are consumed by safety. Obsessed with it, actually. Now, I’m not saying it is wrong to pray for God’s protection, but I am questioning how we’ve made safety our highest priority. We’ve elevated safety to the neglect of whatever God’s best is, whatever would bring God the most glory, or whatever would accomplish His purposes in our lives and in the world.

Would you be willing to pray this prayer? God, bring me closer to You during this trip, whatever it takes….

People who are obsessed with
Jesus aren’t consumed with their
personal safety and comfort above
all else. Obsessed people care
more about God’s kingdom coming
to this earth than their own lives
being shielded from pain or
distress.

Francis Chan’s ‘Last Sermon’ — There will be no cowards in heaven

It’s Official: A Majority Of Americans Would Give Up Liberty In Order To Be Safe From Terrorism. Almost 4 out of 5 Americans are perfectly fine with letting airport security officials gawk at their naked bodies just so they can feel a bit safer from terrorists.

Americans Are Just As Likely to Get Struck By Lightning Than Killed By Terrorists — So why are why are pastors saying nothing as the people line up to get strip searched?

Francis Chan Freedom Quotes: Lukewarm People — "Lukewarm people call 'radical' what Jesus expected of ALL His followers." — "Lukewarm people feel secure because they attend church, made a profession of faith at age twelve, were baptized, come from a Christian family, vote Republican…" — More…

These are quotes by Francis Chan, probably all taken from chapter 4 of Crazy Love. I’m listening to the wonderful audio version, read by Francis, himself!
I thought Francis’ lukewarm list to be so exceptional that I’d share some of his points with you even if I had to transcribe them myself. Thankfully, I don’t have to.
This is my favorite:

Lukewarm people are moved by stories about people who do radical things for Christ, yet they do not act. They assume such action is for “extreme” Christians, not average ones. Lukewarm people call “radical” what Jesus expected of all His followers.

We don’t want to be among those whom our perfectly holy Father whom we can TOTALLY trust spits out of His mouth having squandered away our inheritance (Rev. 3:14-22). We want to safely and JOYFULLY rest in Him!
Life in the Son!

LUKEWARM PEOPLE-FRANCIS CHAN

3. Lukewarm people tend to choose what is popular over what is right when they are in conflict. They desire to fit in both at church and outside of church; they care more about what people think of their actions (like church attendance and giving) than what God thinks of their hearts and lives (Luke 6:26; Rev. 3:1; Matthew 23:5-7).

4.  Lukewarm people don’t really want to be saved from their sin; they want only to be saved from the penalty of their sin. They don’t genuinely hate sin and aren’t truly sorry for it; they’re merely sorry because God is going to punish them. Lukewarm people don’t really believe that this new life Jesus offers is better than the old sinful one (John 10:10; Romans 6:1-2).

5.  Lukewarm people are moved by stories about people who do radical things for Christ, yet they do not act. They assume such action is for “extreme” Christians, not average ones. Lukewarm people call “radical” what Jesus expected of all His followers (James 1:22; James 4:17; Matthew 21:28-31).

8.  Lukewarm people say they love Jesus, and He is, indeed, a part of their lives. But only a part. They give Him a section of their time, their money, and thoughts, but He isn’t allowed to control their lives (Luke 9:57-62).

9.  Lukewarm people love God, but they do not love Him with all their heart, soul, and strength. They would be quick to assure you that they try to love God that much, but that sort of total devotion isn’t really possible for the average person; it’s only for pastors and missionaries and radicals (Matthew 22:37-38).

10.  Lukewarm people love others but do not seek to love others as much as they love themselves. Their love of others is typically focused on those who love them in return, like family, friends, and other people they know and connect with. There is little love left over for those who cannot love them back, much less for those who intentionally slight them, whose kids are better athletes than theirs, or with whom conversations are awkward or uncomfortable. Their love is highly conditional and very selective, and generally comes with strings attached (Matthew 5:43-47; Luke 14:12-14).

15.  Lukewarm people are continually concerned with playing it safe; they are slaves to the god of control. This focus on safe living keeps them from sacrificing and risking for God (1 Timothy 6:17-18; Matthew 10:28).

16.  Lukewarm people feel secure because they attend church, made a profession of faith at age twelve, were baptized, come from a Christian family, vote Republican, or live in America. Just as the prophets in the Old Testament warned Israel that they were not safe just because they lived in the land of Israel, so we are not safe just because we wear the label Christian or because some people persist in calling us a “Christian nation” (Matthew 7:21; Amos 6:1)

I was truly amazed when I saw this video, seriously it shows how God’s creation is just indescribable, just amazing, just AWESOME!

Speechless? Amazed? Humbled?
When I first saw those images, I had to worship. I didn’t want to speak to or share it with anyone. I just wanted to sit quietly and admire the Creator

Francis Chan challenging us to do something with our lives.

[video] Francis Chan: When Sin Looks More Enjoyable Than God — Choosing sin (a broken cistern) over Him (The Spring of Living Water)! "There has never been a person in the history of this planet who has made the exchange and is thankful for it."

Transcribed by Jeff Fenske

Francis Chan

“We know it’s not going to fulfill. We know we can’t be happy outside of God. But everything in us is pulling us that way. What do we do?”

“There has never been a person in the history of this planet who has made the exchange and is thankful for it.”

“This has always been about relationship. It’s always been about love.”

The blame game…

“We can’t just keep running our whole lives [from temptation]. We have to run toward Jesus, the author and perfector. We have to fix our eyes on Him so that all these things are dangling in front of our face but we don’t even notice it — because we’re so focused. Understand that is the key to resisting temptation is running toward the love of God.

That’s why the Bible says if you love God everything is going to be fine. If you love your neighbor as yourself you can’t sin against them.”

Sin, the [Greek] word there is for missing the mark. I used to think, ‘okay, it’s like aiming this arrow at the bullseye. Oh, I just missed the bullseye.’ But the reality of what he’s talking about here: it’s not that you just missed the bullseye. It’s that you started aiming at something else. You took your eyes off of the goal, the target, and you started looking at someone else. That’s why you missed the mark.”

Sin is like giving birth to a still-born baby. “It looked so good. I thought everything was developing…. I left the Spring of Living Water. I left my Love, the One who loved me and provided, and that inheritance. I left all of that for this [empty cistern]? … And that’s why he says ‘Don’t be deceived.’ … God’s going: ‘I love you so much. Don’t take the bait.'”
