San Diego Catholic Diocese denounces parish that called voting Democrat ‘mortal sin’

The Roman Catholic Diocese of San Diego denounced one of its parishes on Friday after its worshippers were told that voting for Democrats is a “mortal sin” that could lead to an eternity in hell.

The Diocese said the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in the neighborhood of Old Town made the statement in an insert to a weekly leaflet given to churchgoers on Oct. 16, calling abortion, same-sex marriage, euthanasia and other political issues “non-negotiables.”

“It is a mortal sin to vote Democrat,” the insert read, with the words underlined and bolded. “If your bishop, priest, deacon or other parishioners tell you to do so, you must walk away from them. Your immortal soul and your salvation are at stake.”

I like the first part, where she talks about why many women, in particular, like the idea of worshiping Mary instead of Jesus. Of course, Mary is just a person who can’t really be prayed to, so demons can impersonate Mary, to be the ‘familiar spirit’ that many then follow.

The Roman Catholic church, headquartered in Rome, Italy, has its own powerful City-State, the Vatican. The Roman Catholic church unofficially came into being in 312 A.D., at the time of the so-called “miraculous conversion” to Christianity of the Roman Emperor Constantine but he still worshipped the sun god. Although Christianity was not made the official religion of the Roman Empire until the edicts of Theodosius I in 380 and 381 A.D., Constantine, from 312 A.D. until his death in 337, was engaged in the process of simultaneously building pagan temples and Christian churches, and was slowly turning over the reins of his pagan priesthood to the Bishop of Rome. …

Prior to the time of Constantine’s “conversion,” Christians were persecuted not so much for their profession of faith in Christ, but because they would not include pagan deities in their faith as well. Then, with Constantine’s emphasis on making his new-found Christianity palatable to the heathen in the Empire, the “Christianization” of these pagan deities was facilitated. For example, pagan rituals and idols gradually took on Christian meanings and names and were incorporated into “Christian” worship (e.g., “saints” replaced the cult of pagan gods in both worship and as patrons of cities; mother/son statues were renamed Mary and Jesus; etc.), and pagan holidays were reclassified as Christian holy days (e.g., the Roman Lupercalia and the feast of purification of Isis became the Feast of the Nativity; the Saturnalia celebrations were replaced by Christmas celebrations; an ancient festival of the dead was replaced by All Souls Day, rededicated to Christian heroes [now Halloween]; etc.). …

When Rome went from being pagan to Christian under Constantine, they had to find a replacement for the great mother of paganism. It was not until the time of Constantine that anyone began to look at Mary as a goddess. Since Mary was the mother of Jesus Christ, she was the most logical person to replace the pagan mother goddess. The pagans could continue their prayers and devotion to the mother goddess, only they would call her Mary. The pagans worshipped the mother as much or more than her son and this is exactly what the Roman Catholicism does. True Christianity teaches that Jesus Christ is to be worshipped – not his mother. The fact remains that Jesus never hinted at the idea of Mary worship nor did any of the apostles. Worshipping the mother goddess along with her child took place centuries before Jesus Christ was ever born in many different parts of the world. In 431 A.D. Mary worship became an official doctrine of the church in at the Council of Ephesus.

Despite the eagerness of Roman Catholic apologists to establish that their veneration of Mary has ancient precedent, marian veneration is a merely human tradition, one that begin to flourish in the fourth century and expanded significantly after the term “Theotokos” was used at the Council of Ephesus to describe Mary as the “God-Bearer,” which she really was in the sense of carrying in her womb one who is both God and man in two distinct natures and one person.

To try to push the date of marian veneration back into the third century, some Roman Catholic apologists (some examples appear below) have appealed to the Sub Tuum Praesidium. That’s an early prayer to Mary. A few scholars have dated this prayer to the mid third century, based on the handwriting. Other scholars have noted that there are two major problems with this idea: (1) the prayer uses the term “Theotokos,” which became popular after the Council of Ephesus (A.D. 431) and wasn’t very popular before then; and (2) the idea of praying to Mary is unknown amongst orthodox Christians in the 3rd century.

Depending on the source, one can find this issue identified in scholarly works that cite this papyrus. For example, The Cult of the Mother of God in Byzantium: Texts and Images, Leslie Brubaker and Mary B. Cunningham editors, “Melkite Syriac Hymns to the Mother of God (9th-11th centuries): Manuscripts, Language and Imagery,” by Nataliaa Smelova (section author), p. 118:

Arguably the earliest and certainly one of the most famous Marian hymns, ‘Υπὁ τἡν σἠν εὐσπλαγχνίαν’ is found in the fourth century (?) papyrus 470 from the John Rylands Library (University of Manchester) as well as in the papyrus P. Vindobon. G 17944, dated to the sixth or seventh century, from the Austrian National Library in Vienna.[fn 3]

1. The prayer is written in Greek on a fragment of Egyptian papyrus which is now in the possession of the John Rylands Library, Manchester. (C.H. Roberts (ed.), Catalogue of the Greek and Latin Papyri in the John Rylands Library, Manchester vol. III, Theological and Literary texts (Nos. 457-551) (1938) no. 470. It is a Greek version of the prayer which occurs in Latin as the Sub tuum praesidium. The papyrus dates from the fourth or fifth century, and may be reconstructed to yield the following translation: ‘Beneath your compassion we take refuge, Mother of God. Do not ignore our supplications in our necessities, but deliver us from danger: alone chaste, alone blessed.’

As you can see from these examples C.H. Roberts’ work is the primary reference. He was a lecturer in papyrology in the University of Oxford and fellow of St. John’s college, and is the one who published this papyrus. The entry for papyrus 470 in his catalog is as follows:

470. CHRISTIAN PRAYER.
Aquired in 1917. 18 x 9.4 cm. ? Fourth century.
PLATE I.
This prayer, written in brown ink on a small sheet of papyrus (the verso is blank), is probably a private copy ; there are no indications that it was intended for liturgical use. The hand, tall, upright, and pointed, with small blobs at the top and bottom of vertical strokes, is of a peculiar type to which I know no exact parallel. The α is of a kind more common in inscriptions than in papyri, and Dr. Bell suggests that the peculiarity of the script might be explained on the ground that it was a model for an engraver.
Mr. Lobel has pointed out to me that the hand resembles somewhat that of the letter of Subatianus Aquila (Schubart, Papyri Graecae Berolinenses, 35; cf. id. Paeleographie, p. 73) with its large and narrow characters; the ο, ι, and to a less extent the ε, are similar in both texts, but the peculiar [hand drawing of character] found in 470 is missing in the other, which on the whole is less decorative. Lobel would be unwilling to place 470 later than the third century. But such individual hands are hard to date, and it is almost incredible that a prayer addressed directly to the Virgin in these terms could be written in the third century. The Virgin was spoken of as Θεοτόκος by Athanasius ; but there is no evidence even for private prayer addressed to her (cf. Greg. Naz. Orat. xxiv. II) before the latter part of the fourth century, and I find it difficult to think that our text was written earlier than that (cf. art. ‘Mary’ in Hastings, Encyclopaedia of Religion and Ethics).

FIRST JESUIT POPE

Jorge Mario Bergoglio a Jesuit Cardinal from Buenos Aires, Argentina has been selected as the new Pope of the Catholic Church. While the choice is celebrated with great joy in Latin America—the largest body of Catholics in the world, who have long felt slighted about the papal post until now—conservative Catholics are worried about the Jesuit’s Leftist political orientation. As Wikipedia said, “Bergoglio is the first Jesuit chosen to be pope. He is also the first pope from South America, the Americas, the New World, and the Southern Hemisphere. He is the first pope from outside Europe in 1,272 years.” This is a big thing to those who feel they have been under-represented for so long.

Having lived in Latin America several years, I’ve had the opportunity to observe and contend with Jesuit priests. The order is Leftist out of it’s “concern for the poor,” but their outreach is more revolutionary than charitable in action. Jesuit theologians concentrate on the “unequal distribution of wealth in the world” and overtly promote socialism and government redistribution in order to achieve “social justice.”

Because of its socialist orientation, many Jesuit priests have become Marxists and communists and have actively worked toward the violent overthrow of existing governments to achieve those ends. During the violent years of guerrilla activity when I was in Latin America, I experienced the Tupamaros in Uruguay and Argentina, and the Marxist guerrillas of El Salvador and Guatemala.

It seems that Jesuits and Maryknoll nuns in those days were always involved in both direct and indirect support of the revolutionaries. A couple of MaryKnoll nuns were killed supporting the communists, which engendered a huge outcry in the international press. No one would print facts about them hiding behind religious immunity in order to supply Marxist guerrillas.

This relates to the new Pope because he did not support the revolutionary arm of the Jesuits and colluded with the military juntas in Argentina during the “desaparecidos” years (the Disappeared Ones) of 1973-1986 and allowed two of the more militant priests under his supervision to be arrested. They were eventually tortured for information.

What this means to me is that Bergoglio is more of the idealogical Left than the radical and revolutionary Left, and that he opposed revolutionary overthrows of existing regimes. While this distinction is nowhere to be found in the English press, his selection generated some negative press in the Spanish and Latin American countries because of support of the “dictadura” which is considered a betrayal by the Left in Europe and Latin America.

Let me note parenthetically, that there was a reason for the regimes in Argentina and Uruguay to kidnap and kill revolutionaries during the Desaparecido years, while not convicted by the courts. The courts were filled with Marxist judges who would never convict their own in the years prior to the rise of “death squads.”

The death squads and other forms of vigilante justice came about as the only way to eliminate the Communists who were responsible for the constant street demonstrations (many violent), bombings and kidnappings for ransom in those countries. In Latin America, universities cannot be invaded by police without permission, so the revolutionaries would retreat to the universities after an attack and use them to cover for the making of bombs and stockpiling weapons.

When a country allows these kinds of safe havens for enemies of liberty, the military is forced to take independent action outside the law and fight a war in the shadows. That’s what happened in Latin America. I’m not saying that death squads were not overzealous or didn’t make mistakes, but it is the Leftists and Marxists in government and the courts protecting the enemy that drove them to it, as a matter of national preservation. Now, all those people have been replaced by yesmen and socialists, so there is little resistance to what’s coming again in Latin America.

Conservative Catholics are also reassured by the new pope’s support of long-held Catholic doctrines of opposition to gay marriage, the teaching that homosexuality is a sin, and the opposition to abortion, euthanasia and contraceptive use.

My concern is that as an ideological Leftist, he will not provide resistance to or change of the current Vatican direction in supporting globalism, as exemplified by remarks of the past two Popes. Ironically, were he more aligned with the revolutionary elements of the Jesuits, he probably would oppose globalism. The hard-core Left is just as opposed to globalist control as on the constitutional Right are—but not for the same reasons. They think it is mere “greedy capitalist” control, not the overarching conspiracy for power and control it really is.

I think Pope Frances will go along with the globalist trend because that matches his history of compromise with past regimes in Argentina. The Vatican needs a good house cleaning to purge it of the Leftist, globalist (money laundering and banking scandals), and homosexual influences, and sadly I don’t think Francis is going to do it. There are powerful partisan factions among the Cardinal selectors representing all these factions and he’s a compromise choice—not a changer.

This is so heavy. How can a person do so much yet be so empty — admittedly having lived a false life? Mother Teresa wasn’t a saint:

“The smile,” she writes, is “a mask” or “a cloak that covers everything.” Similarly, she wonders whether she is engaged in verbal deception. “I spoke as if my very heart was in love with God — tender, personal love,” she remarks to an adviser. “If you were [there], you would have said, ‘What hypocrisy.’

I remember reading this article in Time magazine, print edition, when it came out in 2007, which includes the above quote [entire article is here]:

Her secret letters show that she spent almost 50 years without sensing the presence of God in her life. …

A new, innocuously titled book, Mother Teresa: Come Be My Light (Doubleday), consisting primarily of correspondence between Teresa and her confessors and superiors over a period of 66 years, provides the spiritual counterpoint to a life known mostly through its works. The letters, many of them preserved against her wishes (she had requested that they be destroyed but was overruled by her church), reveal that for the last nearly half-century of her life she felt no presence of God whatsoever — or, as the book’s compiler and editor, the Rev. Brian Kolodiejchuk, writes, “neither in her heart or in the eucharist.”

That absence seems to have started at almost precisely the time she began tending the poor and dying in Calcutta, and — except for a five-week break in 1959 — never abated. Although perpetually cheery in public, the Teresa of the letters lived in a state of deep and abiding spiritual pain. In more than 40 communications, many of which have never before been published, she bemoans the “dryness,” “darkness,” “loneliness” and “torture” she is undergoing. She compares the experience to hell and at one point says it has driven her to doubt the existence of heaven and even of God. She is acutely aware of the discrepancy between her inner state and her public demeanor. “The smile,” she writes, is “a mask” or “a cloak that covers everything.” Similarly, she wonders whether she is engaged in verbal deception. “I spoke as if my very heart was in love with God — tender, personal love,” she remarks to an adviser. “If you were [there], you would have said, ‘What hypocrisy.’

Ughhh — did she then not really mean this? Was she just saying what she was supposed to say, or was she sincere?:

Mother Teresa wasn’t ‘feeling’ Christ’s love, and she could have shut down. But she was up at 4:30 every morning for Jesus, and still writing to him, ‘Your happiness is all I want.’

Her lack of joy is tragic, because Jesus wants to fill us with His joy, which is automatic when we are truly abiding in Him and truly producing fruit. Jesus in John 15:1-12:

It’s tragic that many have done things for God without actually being in God. We can’t just say “Lord, Lord.” Jesus must be Lord of our lives. We must abide in Him. Jesus in Matthew 7:21-23:

Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter into the Kingdom of Heaven; but he who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. Many will tell me in that day, ‘Lord, Lord, didn’t we prophesy in your name, in your name cast out demons, and in your name do many mighty works?’ Then I will tell them, ‘I never knew you. Depart from me, you who work iniquity.’

Did Teresa’s false Catholic doctrines destroy her faith? The following quotes are from Mother Teresa wasted her life serving a false religion.

Teresa relied upon Mary (a person like you and me) to connect her with Jesus:

Mother Teresa was a Catholic through and through. She worshipped Mary as the mother of God and co-redeemer with Christ.

Jesus always did the things that pleased His Father, drawing people to His Father, not Muhammed, and not the false Hindu gods. And He did away with the Priesthood. Teresa helped people serve whomever:

I’ve always said we should help a Hindu become a better Hindu, a Muslim become a better Muslim, a Catholic become a better Catholic”

This should break our hearts that someone did so much “for Jesus” without really knowing Jesus — admitting she faked her smile, and spoke as though her heart was really in love with Jesus. It’s too bad she wasn’t open with the public about her dilemma so she could have been cured, instead of relying on the Catholic leaders, who apparently kept her in the false religious system which really isn’t life in the Son.

May we learn from her example and press into our high callings in Christ Jesus to live Jesus’ narrow way — life in the Son — where fruit remains and our joy will be full — always doing what pleases Him!

All of us can be real, overcoming, going-to-heaven Christians! When we do right we’ll feel right:

God’s guarantee for the truly humble in James 4:6b-8:

“God resists the proud, but gives grace to the humble.” Be subject therefore to God. But resist the devil, and he will flee from you. Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners; and purify your hearts, you double-minded.

We must live in reality. This life is our only chance to get it right.

God loves us so much and wants us to be free!

I was talking to a dear Catholic friend a few days ago, who is a church history scholar, expressing to him part of how the once-saved-always-saved and “it’s hard to lose one’s salvation” deception is happening in the evangelical church today. It’s largely fueled by greatest hits verses, of which the current favorite seems to be the gutted version of Romans 8:1, in which the second part has been removed: “ who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.”

K-LOVE is now running an ad, pushing this deception across America, 24/7, saying:

“Now, there is no condemnation for those who belong to Christ Jesus.”

“God has set you free from shame.”

But this is only when we obey, which is why willfully sinning ‘Christians’ still feel shame and condemnation, because according to what Paul really said, we’re only “in Christ Jesus” when we don’t walk after the flesh but according to the Spirit. And verses 2-17 also show this. But most pastors and K-LOVE prefer to preach 8:1a by itself, instead — deceiving the people.

I explain why the NIV and many other modern versions took out 8:1b in the links, below. Basically, most modern versions rely upon the corrupted Egyptian manuscripts (where scribes often intentionally altered the texts), instead of continuing to quote the more reliable Syrian texts, which the King James and some others rely upon.

The Devil knew he couldn’t add verses to the text, which would be too obvious, so he removed hundreds, based upon the manipulative research done by Westcott and Hort.

Pope Francis says “those who DON’T BELIEVE and who DON’T SEEK the faith” can GO TO HEAVEN by obeying their CONSCIENCE – Vs – LIFE IN THE SON is having a CLEAN CONSCIENCE. But we must KNOW Him to be cleansed by Jesus’ blood. “All have sinned….” Then, by the Holy Spirit we can overcome sin to keep our consciences clean.

The ‘Pope’ may have good intentions, trying to be inclusive, but he’s actually hurting many, giving them false, unbiblical hope.

Perhaps he doesn’t believe in ‘original sin.’ “All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” We all must be forgiven by Jesus’ shed blood. There is no other way to get clean, so then we can live with a clean conscience, empowered and led by the Holy Spirit, abiding in Him.

“There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus, who don’t walk according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit.” – Romans 8:1

We don’t start out with a clean slate. We all must be forgiven to be able to then walk with a clean conscience, as we obey the Spirit and don’t walk according to the flesh.

Unreached people can have an encounter with Jesus without being preached to, but they still must know Jesus to be forgiven by Him. And then we keep our consciences clean (once washed) by overcoming sin through the guidance and power of the Holy Spirit, which the Bible clearly states:

The emphasis on having a clean conscience is completely biblical, but it’s impossible unless we’re forgiven and then empowered to obey, being led by the Spirit. We must be born-again, Jesus said. Then, from a clean slate we take up our cross and follow Him. We abide in Him where fruit remains and our joy is full (John 15), no matter what we have to go through.

“For as the sufferings of Christ abound to us, even so our comfort also abounds through Christ” (2 Cor. 1:5).

Life in the Son is about having a clean conscience, but we must know Him to be cleansed. Then we can live overcoming, Holy-Spirit-empowered lives to keep our consciences clean.

“For if you live after the flesh, you must die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live. For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, these are children of God.” (Romans 8:13, 14).

Jesus died on the cross so we could be free, indeed — taking up our crosses and following Him!

POPE CALLS FOR A WORLD GOVERNMENT

Conservative Catholics are concerned about yet another indication by the Pope that he supports world government. As the AP noted, “Pope Benedict XVI, has called for the establishment of World Government and a New World Order. In a speech made at the Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace on Monday December 3 2012, the Pope called for the ‘construction of a world community, with a corresponding authority,’ to serve the ‘common good of the human family’ [dangerous words without proper conditions and limitations].”

The Pope limited his call to a “moral force” or moral authority that has the “power to influence in accordance with reason, that is, a participatory authority, limited by law in its jurisdiction.” this is a bit naive. I know of no modern example of world government proposals or existing regional governments like the EU where the proponents are amenable to strict limits in law or jurisdiction that would satisfy the demands of American constitutionalists that demand individual liberty.

The AP also noted that “These latest remarks made by the Pope and the Catholic Church come as no surprise considering that in 2010 the Catholic Church sought the establishment of a new Central World Bank that would be responsible for regulating the global financial industry and the international money supply”…. [as well as] “a supranational authority” which would have worldwide scope and “universal jurisdiction” to guide and control global economic policies and decisions. The proposed body (World Government) would not be a superpower [pretty naive], concentrated in the hands of a few, which would dominate all peoples, exploiting the weakest.”

Those are all socialist catchwords (exploitation, concentrations of power in the hands of a few, etc). But his vision is clearly a dangerous step into the future. Once you give supranational authority to a body and a crisis arises where it lacks enforcement power, the natural step is to grant it regulatory, taxation, police and military powers. That’s how you get to a militarized and ugly New World Order. The crisis they will provoke is a world war.

Vatican Council Calls for World Government, Central Bank

A “global political authority” and a “central world bank”: These are the solutions that the Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace recommends for the worldwide financial crisis. “Towards Reforming the International Financial and Monetary Systems in the Context of Global Public Authority,” the document outlining the council’s recommendations, is, in the words of author and Roman Catholic Thomas E. Woods, Jr., “deeply confused,” at once recognizing that central bank-driven inflation and easy credit are at the root of the world’s financial woes and prescribing even bigger government and more highly centralized banking as the cure. There is some debate over the extent to which the document presents the church’s position on the matter. The council’s president, Cardinal Peter Turkson, made it clear at the press conference that launched the paper that the statement was “not in any way the opinion of the pope,” but solely of those who composed it. The council’s secretary, Bishop Mario Toso, when questioned, said the document was reviewed only by the Secretariat of State and then released; the Pope had not read it. While press accounts have often referred to it as if it were a papal pronouncement, National Review’s George Weigel insists that such attribution is “rubbish, rubbish, rubbish.” “The document is a ‘Note’ from a rather small office in the Roman Curia,” Weigel maintains, adding that it “doesn’t speak for the Pope, it doesn’t speak for ‘the Vatican,’ and it doesn’t speak for the Catholic Church.”

Woods, responding to similar criticism from a reader of his blog, argued: “I’m supposed to distinguish between the Pontifical Council and the Pope, you say. Fair enough. But did those people appoint themselves? Is Rome consistently surprised by how liberal its appointees turn out to be? Fewer and fewer people believe this anymore.” Indeed, the council’s recommendations mirror those of Pope Benedict XVI, who in a 2009 encyclical called for “a true world political authority” to, among other things, “manage the global economy.”
