Anchorage statue personifies the world’s watchman
‘HABITAT’: Artist sees work as a geometric view of man being sentinel to the world

Love it or loathe it, Antony Gormley’s “Habitat” puts Anchorage on the international arts map in an unprecedented way.

The giant metal sculpture — 24 feet tall, 13 feet wide and 17 feet from toe to tailbone — prominently situated on the grounds of the Anchorage Museum, cannot be idly encountered. The viewer is compelled to react the instant he or she encounters the stylized human sitting on his haunches, apparently waiting or contemplating.

We can expect this Percent for Art piece to draw serious out-of-state attention. Gormley, of England, is one of the world’s most famous living artists and “Habitat” is his first permanent artwork in America.

The squatting pose has led some wags to suggest that the man is answering the call of nature. But its crossed arms and straight-ahead stare seem more legitimately suggestive of a watchman patiently waiting for a signal or a hunter silently scoping for game. …

Whether one chooses to interpret “Habitat” as monitoring global warming, keeping an eye on big government or something else, it supplies a unique and conceptually new symbol with which Anchorage will be identified.

My third "getting right with those we've hurt" dream – 4/23/10

Dear friends,
I had a dream, this morning, in which I was speaking to apparently a fairly well known rock musician who was severely ill and expected to die. I should have grabbed the recorder right away. I did, but I waited a number of minutes (wanting so much just to go back to sleep but knowing I shouldn’t), too long to be able to retain all of the details. But I think I remember the main points.
I haven’t posted the previous “getting right with another” dream, so perhaps I’ll mention those first. In one, I saw this former church leader while he was getting food in what seemed like a wedding reception or something similar. I said right to him: “when are you going to get right with the people you’ve hurt?”
The second dream was of the same man. We were sitting across from each other at a small table in a fairly open room. My right hand was holding his right hand, earnestly, as I asked: “when are you going to get right with the people that you’ve hurt?”
In the dream this morning, I was in the bleacher area of an indoor arena which holds large public events. I was introduced to two people, one of whom was this apparently fairly famous rock musician; though, I didn’t recognize him.
We were laughing about something, and then he and I stood, looking at each other. I said, “you look happy. You look like a real Christian.” And then I said, “if I were you, I’d get right with everybody I’ve hurt.” He said, “Wow,” like this was something he needed to hear.
And that’s it. It’s crucial that we have reconciled with everyone we can. We need to be right with each other so we can be right with God in order to have faith to enter heaven when we see Jesus face to face — so our consciences won’t condemn us. So we can smile BIG!

1 John 4:16 We know and have believed the love which God has for us. God is love, and he who remains in love remains in God, and God remains in him. 17 In this[,] love has been made perfect among us, that we may have boldness in the day of judgment, because as he is, even so are we in this world.

And when we all live this way: ONE can happen — Jesus’ prayer for us in John 17 — that we would be ONE with each other in Christ. Then the world will know.
And when we confess our sins to one another and then ask for prayer from the right-with-God-and-people elders, then we’ll be healed physically too.

James 5: 14 Is any among you sick? Let him call for the elders of the assembly, and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord, 15 and the prayer of faith will heal him who is sick, and the Lord will raise him up. If he has committed sins, he will be forgiven. 16 Confess your offenses to one another, and pray for one another, that you may be healed.

The insistent prayer of a righteous person is powerfully effective.

So by getting right with those this musician has hurt, he’s making his calling and election sure, and he could get physically healed so he wouldn’t prematurely die.
When we’re all right with one another, then the prayers can be offered in faith. Then we’re righteous people.

Twenty-seven years ago today Corrie ten Boom joined her Father in heaven after living a heroic life here on earth.  In honor of her memory, Corrie’s good friend and companion, Pam Moore, joins Katherine for a conversation about the stories surrounding the ten Booms’ dedication to saving the lives of the persecuted during WWII.  A truly heartening interview.

Pam Rosewell Moore was born near London, becoming a committed Christian at age 21. An Open Letter of Reconciliation and Responsibility to the Iraqi People

From Current and Former Members of the U.S. Military

Peace be with you.

To all of those who were injured or lost loved ones during the July 2007 Baghdad shootings depicted in the “Collateral Murder” Wikileaks video:

We write to you, your family, and your community with awareness that our words and actions can never restore your losses.

We are both soldiers who occupied your neighborhood for 14 months. Ethan McCord pulled your daughter and son from the van, and when doing so, saw the faces of his own children back home. Josh Stieber was in the same company but was not there that day, though he contributed to the your pain, and the pain of your community on many other occasions.

There is no bringing back all that was lost. What we seek is to learn from our mistakes and do everything we can to tell others of our experiences and how the people of the United States need to realize what have done and are doing to you and the people of your country. We humbly ask you what we can do to begin to repair the damage we caused.

We have been speaking to whoever will listen, telling them that what was shown in the Wikileaks video only begins to depict the suffering we have created. From our own experiences, and the experiences of other veterans we have talked to, we know that the acts depicted in this video are everyday occurrences of this war: this is the nature of how U.S.-led wars are carried out in this region.

We acknowledge our part in the deaths and injuries of your loved ones as we tell Americans what we were trained to do and carried out in the name of “god and country”. The soldier in video said that your husband shouldn’t have brought your children to battle, but we are acknowledging our responsibility for bringing the battle to your neighborhood, and to your family. We did unto you what we would not want done to us.

More and more Americans are taking responsibility for what was done in our name. Though we have acted with cold hearts far too many times, we have not forgotten our actions towards you. Our heavy hearts still hold hope that we can restore inside our country the acknowledgment of your humanity, that we were taught to deny.

Our government may ignore you, concerned more with its public image. It has also ignored many veterans who have returned physically injured or mentally troubled by what they saw and did in your country. But the time is long overdue that we say that the value of our nation’s leaders no longer represent us. Our secretary of defense may say the U.S. won’t lose its reputation over this, but we stand and say that our reputation’s importance pales in comparison to our common humanity.

With such pain, friendship might be too much to ask. Please accept our apology, our sorrow, our care, and our dedication to change from the inside out. We are doing what we can to speak out against the wars and military policies responsible for what happened to you and your loved ones. Our hearts are open to hearing how we can take any steps to support you through the pain that we have caused.

Is The Didache a blueprint for the way churches should be?

This is one of the writings of “the early Christian fathers” that I especially liked. It’s big on unity!

What if we compare The Didache to what is practiced in today’s ‘churches?’ 

But every Lord’s day gather yourselves together, and break bread, and give thanksgiving after having confessed your transgressions, that your sacrifice may be pure. But let no one who is at odds with his fellow come together with you, until they be reconciled, that your sacrifice may not be profaned.

Is there even one ‘church’ in America that requires reconciliation? How many pastors have fully reconciled so they’re qualified to lead?

The Didache mentions prophets being a common leadership ministry in the late first century church (like Ephesians 4:11). Where are they in today’s churches?

The Didache also has “the way of death” list that is similar to Paul’s “will not inherit the Kingdom” list in Galatians 5.

I also include their 2-day fasting standard to challenge especially myself, again.

Though The Didache didn’t make the canon, the cut to be in the Bible, it clearly deserves a careful look.

According to James, when ‘Christians’ wish evil on people they’re clearly driven by Hell, itself.

5 So the tongue is also a little member, and boasts great things. See how a small fire can spread to a large forest! 6 And the tongue is a fire. A spring can either produce fresh or bitter water — not both. ‘Christians’ can’t curse people and also bless God in Spirit and in truth. Such ‘Christians’ are hypocrites (v. 17).

9 With it we [‘Christians’ – ed.] bless our God and Father, and with it we curse men, who are made in the image of God. 10 Out of the same mouth comes forth blessing and cursing. My brothers, these things ought not to be so. 11 Does a spring send out from the same opening fresh and bitter water? 12 Can a fig tree, my brothers, yield olives, or a vine figs? Thus no spring yields both salt water and fresh water.

When ‘Christians’ have bitter jealousy and selfish ambition in their hearts, this isn’t from the Holy Spirit, but demons.

13 Who is wise and understanding among you? Let him show by his good conduct that his deeds are done in gentleness of wisdom. 14 But if you have bitter jealousy and selfish ambition IN YOUR HEART, don’t boast and don’t lie against the truth. 15 This wisdom is NOT that which comes down from above, but is earthly, sensual, and DEMONIC. 16 For where jealousy and selfish ambition are, there is confusion and every evil deed.

It’s also interesting how jealousy is in Paul’s who-does-NOT-go-to-heaven list in Galatians 5. James calls it bitter jealousy, which is probably also the case in Paul’s list.
And hatred is a key component to James-3-cursing.

19 Now the works of the flesh are obvious, which are: adultery, sexual immorality, uncleanness, lustfulness, 20 idolatry, sorcery, hatred, strife, jealousies, outbursts of anger, rivalries, divisions, heresies, 21 envyings, murders, drunkenness, orgies, and things like these; of which I forewarn you, even as I also forewarned you, that those who practice such things will not inherit the Kingdom of God.

And Paul’s who-goes-to-heaven list, that follows, is very similar in terminology to what James says in verses 17 and 18 of James 3.

22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faith, 23 gentleness, and self-control. Against such things there is no law. 24 Those who belong to Christ have crucified the flesh with its passions and lusts.

One would have to be a blind man to not see that America is fast losing the fundamental principles of liberty upon which our once-great country was established. And, without a doubt, the single biggest reason for this decline is the lack of concern and effort on the part of today’s Christians and pastors to resist it.

All over America, when one approaches our pastors and church leaders with the obvious decay and ruination of constitutional government and Declaration principles taking place in our land today, the response flippantly comes back: “God hasn’t called me to do that; I’m supposed to win souls and that’s it.” (Or words to that effect.) As if the call to Gospel preaching, evangelism, and missionary endeavor negates our responsibility as citizens of a free land.

Of course, this call to “win souls” doesn’t interfere with these preachers’ golf games; it doesn’t interfere with their family vacations; it doesn’t interfere with their active membership in whatever local civil organization they happen to belong to; it doesn’t interfere with their hiring of a lawyer if they are falsely accused or defrauded; it doesn’t interfere with their invitations to celebrity politicians for special church recognition on patriotic holidays; it doesn’t interfere with them going to the polls to vote; it only seems to interfere when they are personally asked to take a stand in the gap for our country’s liberties. Then, all of a sudden, they haven’t been “called,” or “God will take care of it,” or “Jesus is coming soon,” or “Religion and politics don’t mix,” ad infinitum, ad nauseam.

As a result of America’s preachers’ indifference (and that of the Christians they influence), our country is on the brink of becoming an oppressive and tyrannical state. No, let me rephrase that. America is already in the process of becoming an oppressive and tyrannical state. And it’s the preachers’ fault!

For some, it is a matter of ignorance (I think “willful ignorance” is more appropriate). For some, it is a matter of convenience. For some, it is comfort. For some, it is ambition. Whatever the reason, America’s preachers are contributing to the collapse of the greatest free country the world has ever known–all in the name of saving souls.

I’ve been dragging my feet on this update, because of the second topic. But first:

Cargo’s Last Stand

I’m finally almost finished with my Cargo’s Last Stand photo project at what is supposed to be my personal blog: jefffenske.com. I still have a bunch of Red Wall photos to post, and then I’ll be mostly done. I’d like to post more personal updates there if I can figure out how to tell those just interested in seeing the photos how they can access just them.
On all three of my sites, I have categories listed on the top/right of each page. And at jefffenske.com, I have a Cargo’s Last Stand category, but I don’t think many people access this feature.
About 300 photos are posted, some taking up to 3 hours to process. Here is a good example: Captain’s View. I’m a stickler on getting the colors right, and so many of these photos have a mixture of natural and artificial lights. And the mercury vapor outside lights, and those in our warehouse paint everything in various shades of yellow. And I’m finally understanding how to compensate for fluorescent lighting. But when there are two types of lighting it’s often a tough compromise.
I realize that most people’s monitors don’t accurately show color, but at least I can try to get the source photos right. And I’m learning a ton about so many aspects of processing photos!
I’m the opposite of a “quick, get ‘er done” person — too precise to work in volume, efficiently — when makes me more suited for fine-art photography (my dream job) and technical analysis, which I do in my Bible studies, etc.
Cargo’s Last Stand has been also wonderful in that it feels really good to see coworkers being blessed! And The Red Wall photos will be the icing on the cake. Only one is up so far (right now on the main page). Lots, lots more to come.

On Being Single All of My Life

This is what I’ve been mainly dragging my feet on. About a month ago, I felt like God was prompting me to share more about this d-i-f-f-i-c-u-l-t subject. There are probably people wondering ‘what’s up?’ I’ve shared some things, but mostly in comments that most will never read. I think this will help people understand more of where I’m coming from.

IHOP's Archives Player Has Disappeared [updated 4/5]

4/5 update:
A beta version of the new archives player is up, which isn’t working very well in both Safari and Firefox on my Mac. Hopefully, they’ll get things worked out.
So far, it looks like there will be some drawbacks and advantages to this new player.

IHOP’s archives player is missing from their website.
I’m hoping this isn’t permanent. My preferred way (by far) to watch and listen to IHOP’s prayer room and the awakening services The Prayer Room at IHOP: How to navigate the Archives player to watch different sessions or to pause, repeat, … isn’t currently available.
I wrote IHOP to see if this will be permanent, and if so, will be a way to still access the player by paid subscription.
Personally, I try to find the most inspirational moments in the prayer room, and listen only to them. The live, streaming options they have now are like stepping back into the dark ages for me. I hope there is a way out, and I don’t mind paying for it.
Wes Hall has been saying that only about half of the webstream expenses are being covered, so they may have cut the archives player as part of the cost saving.

It’s hard to remember a time when people were more angry. A civilized person ought to be, first of all, civil. Yet, today there is no discourse, no respect for another’s opinion, no reasoning together for the common good. I am concerned, especially for the church.

One may argue, “Our society is decaying. We should be mad.” Yes, but we can be angry yet still not sin (see Eph 4:26). [Eph. 4:26 fully says (with verses 26b and 27): “be angry and do not sin; let not the sun go down upon your wrath. neither give place to the devil” – ed.].

I will tell you how I look at this. I believe that if the Almighty’s highest plan was to end evil on Earth, He could do so in a flash. Why does He wait? He desires to bring believers to Christlike maturity. In a moment evil would be gone, as it was with Sodom and Gomorrah. But we must never forget: Jesus did not come to destroy men’s lives, but to save them.

What God waits for is us. Our Christlike perfection is the harvest upon which the Father waits. He desires to bring many sons to glory, and this world, with all its evil, is the perfect setting to bring us to Christlike maturity. Here, we have real enemies that God can use to perfect our love; in this environment, we have actual foes whose persecution helps to perfect our prayer.

Yes, we should be angry about what’s wrong, but we must be Christlike in making things right. We cannot just be political; we must be spiritual, like people from another realm.

Rightly there are times when we must defend the helpless among us, but concerning ourselves, let us consider again what Jesus commanded:

“But I say to you, do not resist an evil person; but whoever slaps you on your right cheek, turn the other to him also. If anyone wants to sue you and take your shirt, let him have your coat also. Whoever forces you to go one mile, go with him two. Give to him who asks of you, and do not turn away from him who wants to borrow from you. You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’ But I say to you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, so that you may be sons of your Father who is in heaven” (Matt. 5:39-45).

You see, God desires mature sons and daughters who, while fighting for their world, open the door of love into His world. To see our nation transformed, we ourselves must be transformed. Otherwise, we will risk becoming Christian hypocrites: angry that the world is not Christian but untroubled that we are not Christlike.

Most 'Christians' are Demon Driven and Can Be Free!

“…the fear of rejection, the fear, the rejection, the anger, the hatred, the rage, all of that gone.

Because what would use to happen if I would get into a threatening situation I would feel something rise up within me and grip me, and push me to a feared corner. And I was controlled by fear.

And I’m convinced now that when something rises up in a person and grips them, and pushes them in a negative direction, that thing is a demon.

And I have none of that kind of stuff within me any more. There’s nothing that rises up within me, grips me and pushes me. I’m free.”

SID: Hello. Sid Roth here with Mark Virkler. And we’re going to talk about an area that a lot of people confine to the back rooms. But one-third of the ministry, almost one-third of the ministry that Jesus had was casting evil spirits out of people. There was a freedom that the primitive early church had that is lacking so much today. Now Mark, tell me what your first experience was with deliverance.

MARK: My first experience was with a deacon in our church. He came and he said he had an uncontrollable sin issue. He has fasted, he had prayed, he memorized scripture. Nothing worked. And it was lust, and he would instantly undress every woman who came into the church. He hated himself for it and he could not overcome it. And so he said, “Do you think this could be a demon? And I said, “I don’t know.” ‘Cause I had never cast a demon out of anybody. But I said, “If you want us to pray for you we can.” And so we did. The three elders of the church got together. We prayed for him and within about a half hour to an hour, two or three demons surfaced and we cast them out. I mean, the guy was shaking and there was gruff voice and it said, “I’m not coming out.” And we said, “Yes, you’re coming out.” And we used the name of Jesus. We cast it out. There was sweat pouring off of him. He was shaking. They came out. And I thought, wow, that’s a new experience, because I didn’t even know deacons could have demons. And so I went back to him a week later, six weeks later, a month later, six months later, a year later, two years later, and I asked him the same question: “Is your life different?” And he said yes. He said, “Now it’s like any other sin. I can crucify it when I chose to and I chose to crucify it.” So his compulsion, which was caused by a demon, was broken and he was set free of it through delivered prayer.

SID: So for ten years he would have nothing to do with deliverance until he went to a conference in Australia and all of a sudden he was getting some very usual thoughts.

MARK: Well my life had been getting more mucked up, as I would call it. I picked up some anger and fear, and fear of rejection.

SID: I didn’t know pastors did that. [laugh]

MARK: [laugh] I didn’t either. I thought once I was ordained I’d have no more sin issues. But, you know, I got fired from some jobs and some people wounded me, and so I had wounds in my heart. And some demons said, “We can help you with those wounds.” So they’d magnify them. And here I am starting a 21-day speaking tour in Australia and I’m feeling fear of rejection, rejection, anger, and I’m saying, “God, you know, I’m in no shape to minister.” So I asked a surgeon and his wife, who I had heard did prayer ministry, if she would pray for me. And he said he’d check. And so the next day the two of them got together and they spent three hours praying for me. And in those three hours she was amazing. They got about 20 demons out of me, which really made me feel better. And I was amazed that I had 20 demons and if she could get them out in three hours–

SID: Here’s the bottom line. How was your life different after that?

MARK: Well the fear of rejection, the fear, the rejection, the anger, the hatred, the rage, all of that gone. MARK: We have gotten tremendous results. As I looked at those seven prayers, which I realize she was detaching the anchors the demons hung on to, and that’s why the demons came out so easily.

SID: And the reason they stayed that one time you failed was because they actually are like attorneys. They have legal rights to stay.

MARK: Yeah. And so she would remove all the legal rights through these first six prayers, and the seventh prayer was to cast the demon out. And at that point it would come out easily without any pressure because it’s no longer attached to something within the individual.

SID: And just out of curiosity, when you would pray for normal deliverance, it would be hours and they would yell and scream, and fight. Do you see much of that now?

MARK: No, no. See that’s over with now because now deliverance is usually maybe two or three minutes.

SID: I like that. Don’t go away. We’ll tell you some of these seven supernatural prayers. Be right back.

My Theory on Divorce and ‘Marriage’: It’s Time to Get Out of UNBIBLICAL ‘Marriages’ — "God will judge the sexually immoral and adulterers." We must all be clean!

NOTE: I Posted this in early January (2010) as a theory, simply titled: My Theory On Divorce, which is radically different to what is taught and practiced by many ‘Christians,’ today, but this is something I’ve believed for many years.

Until now, Marriage/Divorce/Remarriage is a subject I’ve avoided mostly because I haven’t gotten any  specific revelations from God on this subject, like I have many others. For example: how tithing is unbiblical, who really goes to heaven, ‘Christians’ James-3 cursing people, how ‘ONE’ can happen (we should be ONE! – John 17), etc. —  I’ve hit these subjects hard on this site. But a commenter brought up this subject, so I thought it would be good to discuss it in its own post.

I’ve decided to present my view as a theory that perhaps others and the Holy Spirit will then confirm or clarify. As always, comments are welcome, and also as always, you can be anonymous if you’d like.
Marriage

There are so many people in a quandry. First, so many have gotten married without making sure their spouse was God’s will, and some pastors are happy to oblige.

I know one pastor who said from the pulpit that God doesn’t care who we marry. Really? Really?? [I actually walked out, the first time ever, horrified because I had already seen some of the devastation of this in his life and ministry…] James 4 says:

13 Come now, you who say, “Today or tomorrow let’s go into this city, and spend a year there, trade, and make a profit.” 14 Whereas you don’t know what your life will be like tomorrow. For what is your life? For you are a vapor, that appears for a little time, and then vanishes away. 15 For you ought to say, “If the Lord wills, we will both live, and do this or that.” 16 But now you glory in your boasting. All such boasting is evil. 17 To him therefore who knows to do good, and doesn’t do it, to him it is sin.

Isn’t who we marry more important than where we live? Isn’t who we marry part of what James calls “this or that?” Aren’t we supposed to be led by the Holy Spirit? Isn’t He supposed to lead us into all truth?

Our heavenly Father does care. He didn’t leave us as orphans. We ought to say, “if the Lord wills…” — “Your will be done.” But many have married without making sure, and now, many wish they had….

But that’s not the main issue I’d like to discuss here; though, feel free to comment on this if you’d like. I’d like to present some ideas on this issue:

What if a ‘Christian’ marries one who is unbiblically divorced? Should he/she stay ‘married’? Are they even married in God’s eyes? Can they then marry (though the world would call it remmariage)?

Jesus said twice in Matthew that whoever marries someone who is unbiblically divorced is committing adultery:

Matthew 5:31 “It was also said, ‘Whoever shall put away his wife, let him give her a writing of divorce,’ 32 but I tell you that whoever puts away his wife, except for the cause of sexual immorality, makes her an adulteress; and whoever marries her when she is put away commits adultery.

Matthew 19:3 Pharisees came to him, testing him, and saying, “Is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife for any reason?” 4 He answered, “Haven’t you read that he who made them from the beginning made them male and female, 5 and said, ‘For this cause a man shall leave his father and mother, and shall join to his wife; and the two shall become one flesh?’ 6 So that they are no more two, but one flesh. What therefore God has joined together, don’t let man tear apart.” 7 They asked him, “Why then did Moses command us to give her a bill of divorce, and divorce her?” 8 He said to them, “Moses, because of the hardness of your hearts, allowed you to divorce your wives, but from the beginning it has not been so. 9 I tell you that whoever divorces his wife, except for sexual immorality, and marries another, commits adultery; and he who marries her when she is divorced commits adultery.”

In today’s false, God-forgives-everything-and-it’s-okay mentality, many ‘Christians’ just think it’s okay to stay ‘married,’ even though Jesus calls what they are doing adultery. They are not truly married in God’s eyes no matter what the pastor who married them said, or the certificate they got from the state says.

Lastblast said this in this comment:

What I found in God’s Word is that many “marriages” in the church today are not “marriages” to God, but are adulterous unions—–unions He NEVER joined as one flesh. What He showed me in His Word is that what we have in the church today is an unprecedented amount of husband/wife swapping……………brethren who are defrauding brethren. Brethren who are not “having their own wives/husbands”, but are taking other’s wives/husbands. What we have are pastors who somehow are teaching that once one punches through that sin gauntlet (whosoever divorces their spouse and marries another commits adultery and whosoever marries one divorced commits adultery) that “voila” they are not [I think he meant now – ed.] joined as ONE FLESH by God.

Where can we find such a teaching in God’s Word? He calls such relationships, adultery (having UNLAWFUL relations with someone who is NOT their spouse). How can one commit adultery AND be married in the sight of God? They can’t. The teaching that once you confess this sin, it is then ok with God to remain in the same relationship is another fallacy. Where do we EVER find in God’s word that confession changes the nature of an illicit relationship? …

So what should one do who is in this situation: legally, but unbiblically ‘married’ to someone who wasn’t biblically qualified to remarry?

First, I think it’s fairly easy to see that they shouldn’t stay married. for they are living in sin, no matter what today’s preachers say. But then, can they rightly marry in God’s eyes someone who is biblically qualified to marry, now that they are legally divorced from a marriage that God never recognized as a marriage?

I think so [providing they seek God to know it this person is the one, as I stated above. This is far more important than where we live. God wants in on these decisions. He wants us to be happy and fulfilled! — not messing around as Fatherless orphans, trying this and that] because in God’s eyes they were never married. They were just committing adultery.

I think these people are Biblically qualified to marry, because they really never were.

It’s time to get out of unbiblical, adulteress marriages. Hebrews 13:4 —

Let marriage be held in honor among all, and let the bed be undefiled: but God will judge the sexually immoral and adulterers.

Patrick Henry, who is called the firebrand of the American Revolution, is still remembered for his words, Give me liberty or give me death. But in current textbooks the context of these words is deleted.

Here is what he said:

“An appeal to arms and the God of hosts is all that is left us. But we shall not fight our battle alone. There is a just God that presides over the destinies of nations. The battle sir, is not of the strong alone. Is life so dear or peace so sweet as to be purchased at the price of chains and slavery? Forbid it almighty God. I know not what course others may take, but as for me, give me liberty, or give me death.”

These sentences have now been erased from our textbooks.

The Focus is On Us, Not HIM

You may have heard this analogy:

First, their was LIFE magazine.

Then, PEOPLE.

Then, US,

And now we have SELF magazine.

No, it didn’t start with HIM magazine, but this shows a trend in America towards self-centeredness — and this is what has happened to worship in the church.
Isn’t worship blessing God, glorifying Him, magnifying God, the Father and Jesus: “You are worthy; You are holy; We magnify You” — not us?
For the years of my early Christian life, starting in the mid-70s, this was what I saw worship as being. And direct-to-God “You are Worthy” worship songs was what I found worked in Bible school in the early ’80s and other places I led worship.
By ‘worked,’ I mean, when we worshiped God, He was blessed and we were filled with the Holy Spirit in a tangible way. We could feel it.
This wasn’t working as well in the main congregation, which is another story — another factor. God honors people who worship in Spirit and in truth. There was a holiness and a hunger in the students and faculty in Bible school that wasn’t as prevalent in the entire church body, including some of the leaders, unfortunately. Still, the songs sung weren’t “bless me, Lord” songs.
Then came the Vineyard Movement, which I actually have mostly positive feelings about. I appreciated John Wimber’s research into early church history, and his teachings about “Doing the stuff,” doing what Jesus did. He read the Gospels in a whole new way, to find out how Jesus did it. We’re supposed to walk as He walked, right? During this time, I wrote, A Call to Intimacy: The Holy Spirit in John’s Gospel & Epistles. The Bible clearly shows that Jesus was led by the Spirit just as we are to. Jesus was our example that we should follow in His steps. We are even to forgive as He forgave! “Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do.” People are demonized. Our warfare is not against flesh and blood, Paul said. But that’s another subject.
I was also greatly impressed by the Vineyard worship music, before the music died (in the early ’90s). So many great worship songs came from that movement. And I don’t understand why these aren’t still standards. Even at IHOP, rarely do they sing these great songs.
But along with the gold, I saw this tendency start in which this “Holy Spirit, come” theme started appearing, along with the “Bless me, Lord” songs.
What I’ve found is that when we bless God, He blesses us automatically: ~”Draw near to Me and I’ll draw near to you.” James 4:

…it says, “God resists the proud, but gives grace to the humble.” 7 Be subject therefore to God. But resist the devil, and he will flee from you. 8 Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners; and purify your hearts, you double-minded. 9 Lament, mourn, and weep. Let your laughter be turned to mourning, and your joy to gloom. 10 Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and he will exalt you.

Isn’t this how we’re supposed to be filled? It is biblical to be filled with the Spirit. “Don’t be drunk with wine, but be filled with the Holy Spirit.” We should be filled 24/7. It’s a Godly thing to want to be filled, to be soaring in God, experientially. But where does it say we are to tell Him to fill us. “Fill us, Lord!” I hear over and over at the IHOP revival [which I mostly also love very much]. And they sing: “Send your rain.” Do this for us, Lord. We tell You what to do; who is Lord here?
I get so tired of watching the worship during the IHOPU Student Revival, waiting for a worship song that we can all worship God with.
About a week ago, I thought Ryan Kondo was going to lead the group into pure worship, the way he had just done in the IHOP prayer room,  [Screenshots] Ryan Kondo MAXIMUM Worship! The Way I Always Want To LIVE!. He started in the same way, singing the same pure-worship song. But then a singer who is normally not on his team hijacked the song into “fill us, Lord,” and I think it ruined what could have and probably should have happened.
Granted, the people weren’t totally there, ready to worship. There is far too much willful sin that is a salvation issue; though, people are taught it isn’t, even at IHOP. Many were mostly interested in receiving. But that is where worship leaders need to really lead. Real worship leaders go, and then the others follow. It’s easy to go with the flow, staying distant, where people are comfortable, playing “bless me, Lord” songs, or songs about us and God.
And what happened to the intimate ballads from the Vineyard era, like “Isn’t He.” John Wimber wrote that. Why don’t we keep what worked and discard what isn’t really biblical and doesn’t really bless God?
I would like to discard the “bless me” songs. Not long ago, they weren’t even sung at all, in my experience, anyway. Keith Green shows that the concept was there, though, in this song from his album, No Compromise, 1978.

Oh bless me Lord, bless me Lord,
You know it’s all I ever hear
.
No one aches, no one hurts,
No one even sheds one tear.
But He cries, He weeps, He bleeds,
And He cares for your needs.
And you just lay back
And keep soaking it in
.”

I don’t have any problems with people going to meetings where God is moving in order to get filled with the Spirit. I attended 33 of the 36 meetings that Rodney Howard-Browne held in Anchorage, Alaska. I was touched greatly. I also went to the Toronto blessing twice. If I lived in Kansas, I’d go to some of the IHOP meetings. But this isn’t the revival that is meant to be, yet.
I don’t see any calls for people to get right with those they’ve hurt, which was the hallmark of the Asbury Revival: Asbury Revival, 1970: “Dr. Kinlaw, I am a liar. Now what do I do?”
And Shelley [a leader at IHOP] got a dream about how Jonathan Edwards is a key to the Third Great Awakening coming, but the IHOP leaders almost totally ignore his theme: Sinners in the hands of a God Who doesn’t have a joyful heart about the state of the church, today. The fact is that most ‘Christians’ aren’t right with God enough to go to heaven: Who-Goes-To-Heaven Scriptures — Narrow is the Way, but this doesn’t fit our “we’re saved no matter what” and “God loves us no matter what” theology, that really is from the pit of hell, and is really the number one reason that we’re not seeing full-fledged revival. And it’s the number one reason why people (even most church leaders) aren’t comfortable singing real-worship songs, like I’ve been seeing Jaye Thomas do on the few occasions he’s led in the IHOP prayer room, recently. I would love to see him be allowed to lead worship during an awakening meeting. And I’m hoping that he’ll have the guts to worship no matter what, just like he’s been doing in the prayer room: [Screenshots] IHOP Real-Worship Leader: Jaye Thomas!!!
Where did the “bless me, Lord,” “fill us, Lord” trend actually originate? I think it mainly came from the Vineyard movement.
It’s buried in a box, somewhere, so I can’t quote the reference, but I read in a book that I bought in the Toronto Airport Christian Fellowship book store something like this. Apparently, John Wimber taught that they found a prayer in the early church fathers writings, which I think was something like “Come, Holy Spirit” [If anyone knows the exact prayer quote, I’m interested.], and this is mainly what they based the “fill us, Lord” concept on.
I’m very thankful for what God is doing at IHOP. And I greatly appreciate what Mike Bickle and Wes Hall have done to create this great atmosphere in which God is definitely moving. But this is just a drop in the bucket, as Wes so often states. He talks about the River flowing.
Well, what is keeping The River from flowing? I think it’s unbiblical doctrine about who goes to heaven. That’s number one. And that is part of why attendees don’t want to directly worship God in their hearts.
But reverse-worship is also a great problem. And I see it wasting so much time, which we really don’t have right now.
May we get our doctrines right, including what worship really is.
“He is the potter; we are the clay.” He doesn’t obey us; we obey Him. Who is Lord? Worship is about Him, not about us.
We need a vision of how great He really is, how holy He really is. Jaye Thomas recently sung:

There is One seated on the throne, He is God,
seated on the throne, and He is holy
.

“We join with the four living creatures.
We sing the song that the angels sing.
We want to know what they know.
We want to see what they see when they cry holy, holy, holy!

We sing holy, holy, holy is the Lord God Almighty.
We sing holy, holy, holy is the Lamb!

Reverse-Christianity is taking us down. But real Christianity can take us up where we belong — soaring in Him — right with one another — pure and clean — in fear and awe and in love with Him.
We can be ONE with Him when we are ONE with each other, Jesus prayed in John 17. “Then the world will know.”
This “bless me, Lord” stuff….
Let’s worship Him alone. Paul talked about how we’d worship the creation instead of the Creator. This is happening in America, big-time! Look at the emphasis on the human body. Romans 1 isn’t just about homosexuality. It’s not even mainly about homosexuality. It’s about worshiping the creation instead of the Creator. This is our sin.
“God resists the proud, but gives grace to the humble. Draw near to Him and He’ll draw near to you.”
It’s guaranteed. He will fill us when we worship Him in Spirit and in truth. We don’t have to ask Him to — or tell Him to [God is so amazingly patient in putting up with all of this, I think. I don’t even hear a ‘please’]. He will just do it. It’s as sure as gravity.
Power to the peaceful.
Which reminds me: when are evangelical Christians going to publicly repent for supporting the reverse-Christian wars? Our hands have to be clean, you all.
